    Notes
    • Albert's parents moved from Pfautsch Hill to a home on West 2nd Street, where he grew up and received his education in St. George parish school, but he left school two months short of completing his 8th grade, due to a job opportunity. Already as a school boy he had worked during vacations as a waterboy for his father's construction firm, getting two buckets of bear from the saloon on 4th Street at 9 & 11 am and 2 & 4 pm, earning 15 cents an hour. He began working full time for Klenk Lumber at 4th and Market when he left school. They needed an office boy and he had studied typing, shorthand, and bookkeeping in school. He worked 11 weeks before he was paid anything and then recieved a dollar bill for each of those weeks. In 1918 he left Hermann to be a bookkeeper for Capital Beer, a brewing company in Jefferson City, earning $100 a month. But when prohibition started, he came back to Hermann in 1920 to work again for Klenk Lumber. When Wiles-Chipman of St. Louis organized that business into the Hermann Lumber Company on 1 November 1922, Albert became manager of the yard.
Albert and Melitta lived for many years near the old St. George Cemetery southeast of town. Later on they built a new home off highway 100 on the south edge of town. When Mrs. Baumstark became ill, she lived for a number of years in the Hermann Area Hospital, but in 1991 she moved to the Health Center in Hermann.
Mr. Baumstark bought the Hermann Lumber Company in 1958. All his sons worked there. Afterwards, Albert Jr. took over the yard in Herculaneum in 1947, Emil ran the Wentsville and Wright City yards in 1949, and Charles stayed with Albert at the Hermann site, eventually buying it in 1975. Albert always kept an office there and retired at his 90th birthday in 1991. Melitta also worked there for 31 years. He also played the clarinet in the Hungry Five Band for 30 years, as well as in the Enterprise Military Band. He served on the advisory board of St. Francis Hospital in Washington from 1962-67, and was on the committee for the Hermann Area Hospital when it was founded. He wrote a column "Chips and Splinters" for the local paper each week for 15 years, which included household hints, family news, jokes, philosophy, and plugs for local civic events, as well as advertising for his business. His hobby has been making rosaries, and he had compoleted 11,100 by june 3, 1991, sending them throughout the world.
