Notes

Charles Baumstark, immigrated to this country in August, 1880. His father's name is unknown, but it was told that he made boots for Kaiser Wilhelm. Carl Baumstark was also a shoemaker by trade and upon locating in St. Louis he opened a shop. On account of his health he was forced to retire from shoemaking business but took up carpentry instead and soon became a contractor in which line he was highly successful.
When the family lived on College Avenue in St. Louis they were quite poor. A very wealthy lady named Kulage used to bring them food. Her husband had made a lot of money and se saw a need to help this growing Baumstark family. The Pink Sisters in St. Louis also helped the family. While in St. Louis they attended the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 2011 Linton St.
In 1890 he bought a farm in Hermann, Mo. This farm had a grape vineyard, a two lane bowling alley, a dance hall, and a barn. Many varieties of grapes were grown there and made into wine. The wine was sold until prohibition. Carl retired to this farm in 1891, where he lived until his death on June 22 1916. He died in the arms of his son George.
Carl was said to be a pretty unhappy, closed mouth man and several of his children (especially the older ones) were said to hate him. In his later years he had gray hair and a big gray handlebar moustache. I feel sure he worked himself to death as we Germans have a tendency to do.
